Yogi Adityanath says no riots in UP during his tenure, Home Ministry report says 195 incidents

On January 3, 2019, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath put out a tweet claiming that there have been no riots during his tenure of two years.

“मार्च में मेरे शासनकाल के दो वर्ष पूरे होंगे। मेरे अब तक के शासन में, कोई दंगा नहीं हुआ है। (Two years of my term will be completed in March. In my tenure so far, no riots have taken place),” Adityanath tweeted.

However, Adityanath’s claim is absolutely false.

THE TRUTH:

According to a reply by Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir to the Lok Sabha on February 6, 2018, 822 incidents of communal violence took place in India in 2017, out of which 195 were reported from Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

In these incidents, 44 people lost their lives and 542 people were reported to be injured.

AltNews even reported three major incidents of violence that were reported between after Adityanath-led came to power in the state.

Saharanpur clashes:

In May 2017, clashes took place between the Thakur and Dalit communities in Shabbirpur village. According to a Hindustan Times article published on May 5, 2017, “Later, on May 5, a Dalit group objected to a procession of Thakurs to mark the birth anniversary of Rajput king Maharana Pratap, triggering violence, in which one person was killed and over 15 injured.”

Bulandshahr violence:

In December, 2018, police officer Subodh Kumar Singh was killed by a mob when the former went to control the violence caused over the slaughter of 25 cows in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr.
