Nathuram Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha – a Right-Wing political outfit when he assassinated the Mahatma on January 30, 1948. The RSS maintains that he was not a member of the party at the time of the assassination but Nathuram’s own brother, Gopal Godse, clearly states in his book, “Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi”, that all the Godse brothers were active members of the RSS at the time. Godse grew up in the RSS and it became a second home for him.
Gopal said, “He (Nathuram) has said in his statement that he left the RSS. He said it because Golwalkar and the RSS were in a lot of trouble after the murder of Gandhi. But he did not leave the RSS.” The statement clearly indicates That Nathuram Godse was very much a part of the RSS at the time he murdered Gandhi ji.
Godse was strongly driven by the RSS ideology which revolved around Hindutva and the supremacy of one religion over all others. The RSS was opposed to Gandhi’s secularism and particularly his kindness towards Muslims in Pakistan. The RSS believed that the people of all religions whose birthplace is outside India cannot be first citizens of India.
RSS men obstructed Gandhi’s prayer meeting on April 3, 1947. A few months later (on September 12), Gandhi addressing his prayer meeting stated that the RSS hands were steeped in blood. In November, he made his concerns known to the Congress, ”I have heard that the Sangh is at the root of all this mischief . Hinduism cannot be saved by orgies of murder.”
The next day, November 16, he spoke of ‘the Hindu Mahasabha assisted by members of the RSS who wish that all Muslims should be driven away from the Indian Union’.
On January 20, 1948, one Madanlal Pahwa threw a bomb which exploded some 20 metres away from where Gandhi was sitting. Ten days later, that conspiracy accomplished its objective. Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in conspiracy with others.
A letter which Sardar Patel received after the assassination from a young man, who according to his own statement had been gulled into joining the RSS organization but was later disillusioned, described how members of the RSS at some places had been instructed beforehand to tune in their radio sets on the fateful Friday for the ‘good news’. After the news, sweets were distributed in RSS circles at several places including Delhi.
Thus, the RSS with its narrow-minded, communal and regressive ideology was directly responsible for the assassination of Gandhi.
