PMAY (Urban): Only 15 per cent houses completed in 3 years

According to data provided by the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, only 15 per cent of the 54.95 lakh houses sanctioned in last three years under the Central Government’s project Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY (U)) have been completed.

Under the PMAY (Urban), the government has set a target of constructing once crore houses in urban areas across the country by 2022. The project was started in 2015 and the aim is to complete the target in seven years.

It is aimed at providing  “Housing for All” by the end of the Mission period-2022.

A National Urban Housing Fund for Rs. 60,000 crores has been set up for raising Extra Budgetary Resources (EBR) in phases, for the rapid implementation of PMAY (U).

However, only 15 percent has been achieved in 3 years.

Last month, the ministry approved construction of nearly 1.12 lakh affordable houses for urban poor, which took the total number of houses being funded under the PMAY (Urban) sanctioned to 54,95,443.

As many as 8.55 lakh houses have been completed till August 21 this year since the launch of the flagship while work is underway on 30.4 lakh units across the country, as per the ministry’s official figures.

The central assistance of ₹78,017.11 cr was sanctioned but only ₹ 27,684.31 cr have been released till now.

The government has maintained that the work is going on in full swing and it is exploring new techniques to quicken up the process of construction.

Similarly, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) (PMAY-G), the performance by the government has been dismal.

With a target of construction of 1.02 crore houses by March 2019, the government has not been able to complete even half the number of targeted houses. This also includes completion of two lakh incomplete IAY (Indira Awaas Yojana) houses.

As many as 42,55,873 houses have been constructed till July 19 this year.

It can be made out how serious the government really is towards welfare projects and towards the upliftment of the poor.
