PM Modi tried to mislead country one more time

Prime Minister Narendra Modi just can’t stay away from his habit of misleading the country with manipulated statements and distorted facts. This time also, he tried to mislead the country with his claim that rapists in India are hanged within a set time frame.

“There used to be rapes in this country earlier too, it is a shame that we still hear about such cases. Now, culprits are hanged within 3 days, 7days, 11 days and a month. Steps are being taken continuously to get daughters justice and results are evident,” PM Modi said on Wednesday at a rally in Surat, Gujarat.

Let’s enlighten our Prime Minister on the same and show our readers how this claim is as bogus as the rest made by him.

Not even one rape convict has been executed since 2004. It was last in 2004, when Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl, reported Scroll.

In the wake of the gruesome Kathua rape case, the provision for capital punishment for the rape of girls below 12 years was introduced by the government in April 2018.

Since then, nine people have been sentenced to death but they have not been executed yet. Also, in the case of capital punishment, convicts are given a chance to file mercy petitions with the Supreme Court and the President, and this process can take months and even years, sometimes.

Apart from that, there’s no official data on the same since the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has not released its annual crime report since 2016.

Now, since there is no NCRB data for 2017 and 2018, how could PM Modi make such a claim.

Also, his statement that culprits are hanged within 3 days and a month is also next to impossible as the government’s own guidelines for how long a rape trial should be is more than a month.

The central government has set a two-month time limit for completing investigations in a rape case, and another two months for completing the trial.

PM Modi should have at least read his own government’s guidelines before making such a distorted claim.
