No, Manmohan Singh did not touch Sonia Gandhi’s feet

Facebook page फिर एक बार मोदी सरकार (Phir Ek Baar Modi Sarkar) shared an image of a turbaned man touching UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s feet on June 28, 2018. The text on the image reads, “India’s great economist Dr. Manmohan Singh”, implying that the person touching Sonia Gandhi’s feet is former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The image has more than 2,000 likes and more than 11,000 shares.

Many other right-wing pages on Facebook have shared the same image and have received massive traction. For instance, the post shared by the page ‘BJP All India’ received nearly 4,000 likes and 3,000 shares.

Others pages like, ‘We Support Amit Shah Modi Mission 2019’ and ‘Vote 4 BJP’ also shared the same image.

However, a simple reverse Google image search by AltNews reveals that the photograph is from 2011, and Getty Images published the photograph with the caption, “A representative touches the feet of Sonia Gandhi as Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi looks on during the Indian Youth Congress’ national level convention of Elected Office Bearers in New Delhi on Tuesday – November 29, 2011.”

Had it been published by some unverified news agency, there could have been some doubt, but it was published by Getty Images, which is an American stock photo agency supplying licensed images to media, businesses and creative professionals.

Congress is a party which has always stood up to its values and has valued each and every member of it, irrespective of their party post or level. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi both have always been very respectful towards Manmohan Singh and have always considered him as an elder.

But what else can be expected from BJP, the social media team of which is filled with bots, who are out there on social media spewing venom, hate, and bigotry.
