Contrary to what Modi says, BJP has majority in just 10 states

The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have continued to boast about BJP’s majority in most of India, saying that, “the BJP is in power in 20 states of the country which shows that people have endorsed NDA’s performance in the last four years.”

However, the truth is the BJP is only in clear majority in 10 states. The other ten, BJP is in power only because of pre and post-poll electoral alliances. The states in which BJP is in power are – Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and in these states, it has a clear majority. In Arunachal Pradesh, Congress won 42 out of 60 seats and formed the government but after engineering mass defections, formed its own government.

The remaining states where BJP claims to have a clear majority are

Maharashtra: 122 of 288 seats

Assam: 60 of 126 seats

Bihar: 53 of 343 seats

Jharkhand: 35 of 81 seats

Goa: 13 of 40 seats

Jammu and Kashmir: 25 of 89 seats

Manipur: 21 of 60 seats

Meghalaya: 2 of 60 seats

Nagaland: 12 of 60 seats

Yet the BJP clearly does not have a majority and is only in power because of its alliance partners.

In the other Indian states, with the exception of Karnataka, the BJP is very short of seats.

Kerala: 1 of 140 seats

Punjab: 3 of 117 seats

West Bengal: 3 of 295 seats

Telangana: 5 of 119 seats

Andhra Pradesh: 4 of 175 seats

Delhi: 3 of 70 seats

Odisha: 10 of 147 seats

Tamil Nadu: 0 of 232 seats

Sikkim: 0 of 32 seats

Puducherry: 0 of 30 seats

Recent news has shown that many of their allies have been showing signs of dissatisfaction. The Telugu Desam Party of Andhra Pradesh has already withdrawn from the union government and parties like Shiv Sena and Shiromani Akali Dal are protesting against BJP’s unilateral decision making. As the 2019 elections come closer, perhaps Mr. Modi should consider talking to the members of the National Democratic Alliance, it might also be prudent to look up the word democratic in a dictionary.
